With a smartphone and an app, you have all you need in the palm of your hand to go geocaching. Geocaching is a modern-day twist on treasure hunting that combines the outdoors with technology.
In geocaching, you use a GPS device or a smartphone application to navigate to specific GPS coordinates. Once you arrive at the coordinates, the challenge is to find the actual "X," or treasure.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department holds the Texas State Park Geocache Challenge, which gives you a chance to explore state parks and even earn points toward saving money on overnight camping or park visits. Several state parks in the Highland Lakes, including Inks Lake State Park, Pedernales Falls State Park, Longhorn Cavern State Park, Colorado Bend State Park and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, offer caches to hunt. Go to tpwd.state.tx.us for more information on geocaching in the parks and geocaching.com for more information on activity itself.
