BURNET — Caity Clinton said people kept telling her last year’s Highlandette Spring Show was the best one they had seen.
That could be why The Picayune readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners voted it as their favorite Burnet-area theater production in the 2015 Locals Love Us awards.
Clinton joked that, after such praise, she didn’t know how this year’s show would be better.
“But I think we’ll be able to do it. We have a great group of girls,” said Clinton, who has been the Highlandettes director since 2008. “They’ve worked hard and pushed themselves to be better than they expected themselves to be.”
Last year’s show, ‘Cover to Cover: Dancing Between the Lines,’ was about books, Clinton said.
“We try to make sure we have a theme based around our show and carry the theme throughout. We tied in the books they read in school as well,” Clinton said. “It gave every dance a meaning and a purpose.”
Some of the books used were “Pride and Prejudice,” “Divergent,” “The Hunger Games,” “The Old Man and the Sea,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Harry Potter” and more. There were 32 items in the program.
Clinton said there are 30 girls in the Highlandettes this year, but many more students are needed to put on the Spring Show. There will be cheerleaders, the band, the Burnet Ensemble Theatre Company and more who perform on stage or make everything run smoothly behind the scenes.
“About 200 kids from (Burnet Consolidated Independent School District) will perform in the show,” she said.
This year’s Spring Show is May 1-2. The theme isn’t official, Clinton said, but she gave a hint.
“Impact,” she said. “The different events and people that have changed the world and affected how we live now.”
Fitting for a group that’s made an impact on so many students in the Burnet school system.
