Tucked just off RR 1431 between Kingsland and Fuzzy’s Corner is a place to which you can escape for a few hours or a few days. If you’re into fishing, hunting for arrowheads, or just relaxing under the Highland Lakes sky, you can’t miss with a visit to Long’s Fish and Dig.
Those are just a few of the reasons The Picayune readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners selected Long’s Fish and Dig as their Locals Love Us favorite campsite in the Kingsland area.
A long line of folks have ventured out to Long’s, which is nestled along the Llano River.
Now owned by Macolm Long, the property has belonged to the Long family for more than 100 years. They opened it up to the public in the early 1900s.
At that time, they charged folks about 10 cents for a load of them to spend the day fishing.
Today, it’s only $7 for people to fish, swim, or relax at Long’s Fish and Dig. Kids ages 6-12 get in for a buck, while those 5 and younger are admitted for free.
Of course, there’s plenty of space for camping at additional fees: $10 per night or $20 if you prefer a spot with electricity. Long’s even has cabins for overnight stays ranging from $40 to $70.
“There’s so much to do out here,” said Trina Penny, who you’ll often find in the office helping people get ready for a day or more of fun. “There’s some great fishing here. You can camp, and we have a lot of trails. Plus, there’s arrowhead digging.”
An area is set aside to dig for arrowheads. In the Llano River or Pennington Creek, running on one side of the property, you can even pan for gold.
Digs and panning are $20 per day.
During dove season, the camp offers public dove hunts — again at a fee.
Long’s Fish and Dig is open 365 days a year. The office is open from 8 a.m. until dusk and a bit longer on summer weekends.
There’s a lot worth exploring at Long’s, which is why people love going out there.
The camp is located at 822 CR 321 just north of Kingsland off RR 1431. Take the dirt road back to the T, turn right, and head up to the main office to check in. Penny and the rest of the staff will be glad to help get you started on a day of outdoors fun.
