For six nights a year, a corner of downtown Burnet transforms into biblical Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth. Walk among the townspeople as they sell their wares, care for their animals, feed their families, and pay taxes to the Romans, all while marveling at the news of a newborn King.
Main Street Bethlehem opens its doors from 6-9 p.m. Friday-Sunday, Dec. 6-8 and Dec. 13-15. The annual event began in 1993 with sheets and temporary walls. Over the years, First Baptist Church of Burnet built permanent structures at 108 S. Vandeveer St., just off of the courthouse square.
More than 200 volunteers don costumes portraying Roman soldiers, merchants, landlords, jailers, blacksmiths, travelers, and more. Live animals, cooking fires, and a working blacksmith add to the authenticity.
As you walk through, listen for whispers of excitement as the people of Bethlehem spread the good news. As you leave, you will see the cave with Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus.
Admission to Main Street Bethlehem is free. No tickets or reservations are needed. The line moves quickly, organizers promise!
