Enjoy bird-watching, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, and beautiful waterfalls at Pedernales Falls State Park, just east of Johnson City. Camp out to spend even more time exploring the park.

The biggest draw are the Twin Falls that spill from the upper basin into the park. Each hike out to the falls uncovers a new nook and cranny waiting to be discovered.

Swimmers, be forewarned: Jumping in near the falls is strictly prohibited. Park rules do not allow swimming, tubing, or wading in this portion of the park. Other parts of the park allow for a dip, usually near the youth camping area. But if you’re considering any water activities, be cautious: Rain can cause the river to quickly rise.

The Pedernales River flows through the park, creating other swimming holes. One favorite is Arrowhead Pool, where Bee Creek finds its way into the Pedernales River.

Explorers should reserve a day to enjoy the backcountry on Wolf Mountain Trail. The views on this 7-mile trek offer visitors a different perspective of the park than if they stayed within 100 yards of the parking lot.

Pedernales Falls State Park is located at 2585 Park Road 6026, several miles east of Johnson City. Visit its webpage or call 830-868-7304.
