Lake LBJ is a favorite retreat in the Highland Lakes since it was created seven decades ago. Don’t just make a day trip to Lake LBJ; plan to stay for a weekend (or longer) to enjoy everything the lake has to offer.
Here are 5 reasons to stay on Lake LBJ.
1. Outdoor activities are never-ending
Pick an outdoor recreational activity: hiking, cycling, golfing, paddling, fishing, mountain biking, birdwatching, climbing, horseback riding. All are accessible around Lake LBJ. Not to mention that many state parks are nearby. Visit renowned parks such as Enchanted Rock or Longhorn Cavern.
2. The water averages a cool 81 degrees in the summer
Unless you’re a complete stranger to Texas, it’s no surprise how hot it is most of the year, especially the summer. Average highs from June through August in the Hill Country are in the mid-90s, and the temperature often creeps up to over 100 degrees. When you add the humidity and the sweat on your skin, it feels likes you’re in the hottest place on Earth. With an average water temperature of 81 degrees, Lake LBJ is a prime spot to cool off. 3. Smalltown lifestyle at its best
Many small towns are within a 30-mile radius of Lake LBJ. In these towns, you will find an array of antique shops and boutiques, historic (and perhaps haunted) buildings, local wineries, true Southern hospitality, and so much more. Take time to check out the historic cities of Llano, Johnson City, Marble Falls and Burnet; our downtown guide gives the low-down on what to do. When planning your visit, take a look at our events calendar at 101HighlandLakes.com/EVENTS.
4. Stunning views at all times of the day and night
Wake up early to watch the sunrise. Look all around you during the daytime to catch views of the rolling Hill Country. Watch the sunset turn the sky magnificent shades of red, orange and purple. At night, open up your telescope to see the night sky, where millions of stars are visible because of a lack of light pollution. Stargaze with astronomers at the Eagle Eye Observatory
5. There’s room for the whole family
