After overindulging in Thanksgiving fare, take your family on a hike through one of the scenic Highland Lakes destinations. 

Here are five trails with fun activities for everyone to help burn off that holiday meal:

1. Inks Lake State Park

Inks Lake State Park is one of the Hill Country’s most reliable outdoor destinations thanks to its namesake lake being at a constant level year-round, making it ideal for water activities.

The park also features approximately 9 miles of hiking trails that wind through rocky terrain and lakefront stretches. The trail system ranges from easy shoreline walks to more rugged granite formations near Devil’s Waterhole, a popular spot for swimming, exploring, and cliffside views. Visitors can also enjoy kayaking, canoeing, paddle boating, and wildlife watching along the water. 

With Longhorn Cavern State Park only a short drive away, Inks Lake is perfect for pairing with an underground tour or additional hiking. 

2. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Enchanted Rock is a Central Texas icon– its massive pink granite dome rises dramatically above the surrounding Hill Country, drawing hikers and nature lovers from around the world.

The summit trail is steep but rewarding, offering panoramic views that stretch for miles and make the climb worthwhile after a holiday feast. 

The park includes 11 miles of trails total, from rugged loops around the base to quieter backcountry routes where wildlife and unique granite formations dominate the landscape. Rock climbers will find numerous bouldering and climbing opportunities on the dome’s flanks. 

The surrounding area also adds to the experience: Fredericksburg and Llano are both nearby, offering wineries, breweries, local shops, German restaurants, and more, making Enchanted Rock a perfect Thanksgiving outing.

3. Colorado Bend State Park

Colorado Bend State Park is a rugged landscape of trails and diverse wildlife, located along a remote stretch of the Colorado River. The park is home to the famous Gorman Falls, a breathtaking 70-foot spring-fed waterfall that cascades over rock formations covered in lush moss. The hike to the falls is moderately challenging and the perfect post-meal adventure.

With 35 miles of trails, visitors can choose from riverside paths, canyon climbs, and hilltop vistas. In addition to hiking, the park offers fishing, kayaking, cave tours, and wildlife viewing, making it ideal for active families and adventurous groups. Its remote setting provides a quiet escape from holiday crowds, while the diversity of terrain allows you to tailor the hike’s intensity to your energy level.

4. Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge offers a peaceful, uncrowded option for hikers looking to immerse themselves in natural Hill Country landscapes. While the refuge is known for its role in protecting the rare golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo, it also features several trail systems ideal for exploring after a Thanksgiving meal.

Doeskin Ranch provides routes ranging from short, easy loops along creeks and meadows to more challenging ridge climbs with sweeping views. 

Visitors seeking solitude or scenic vistas can head to the Sunset Deck at Warbler Vista, which overlooks Lake Travis and offers some of the best sunset views in Central Texas. 

5. Longhorn Cavern State Park

Longhorn Cavern State Park offers a unique blend of aboveground trails and underground geological features. While the caverns are the highlight, featuring guided walking tours, blacklight tours on weekends, and more adventurous wild cave expeditions.

The park also includes scenic surface trails that travel through Hill Country woods and historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) structures. These trails are gentle and accessible, making them excellent for a relaxed but refreshing post-feast walk. 

Exploring the caverns is a fascinating way to burn calories while learning about the area’s geology, folklore, and human history. Located just minutes from Inks Lake State Park, visitors can easily turn their day into a two-stop outdoor adventure.
