For more than 30 years, the Lambda Nu chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International has been making a difference in Kingsland and beyond through philanthropy, scholarships, and community service.
That philanthropic impact was recognized by The Picayune Magazine readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners, who voted the Lambda Nu the Favorite Club/Organization for the Kingsland/Llano area in the 2025 Locals Love Us contest.
The chapter has 28 members and raises thousands of dollars each year through events such as Music Bingo Nights and the AquaBoom Patriotic Fish Fry. Proceeds fund local scholarships and support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and Open Door Recovery House.
Lambda Nu also supports local teachers through its annual Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, provides supplies to Share the Harvest food pantry, and contributes to Hope for Heroes, a San Antonio-based organization assisting veterans.
“We’re all about helping our community,” said Lambda Nu President Diana Peneles. “Whether it’s delivering meals, raising money for scholarships, or helping someone in need, we want to be there for Kingsland.”
Members meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Kingsland Community Center to plan fundraisers, discuss new service projects, and connect with their fellow sisters.
“One of the best parts is the sisterhood,” said chapter Vice President Janis Spears. “You have 28 girlfriends, and if you need something to do or go somewhere, they’re there.”
Beyond Kingsland, Lambda Nu plays a role at the district, state, and even international levels as part of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a global philanthropic service organization. Through leadership training and collaboration with other chapters, members share ideas and extend their impact outside of their immediate community.
“We all have different strengths, and we come together to make a real difference,” Spears said. “It’s rewarding to know that the work we do is truly helping people.”
