MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls Post Office’s Sal Castro saw a familiar face waiting for him when he finished a shift recently.
“Is it that time of year again?” he asked with a grin, realizing the visit meant another Locals Love Us award for favorite postal carrier in the Marble Falls area voted on by The Picayune readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners.
Castro has won so many, he has lost count. But he doesn’t take it for granted.
He noted the boring part of his day is being at the post office.
“What I get excited about is being on the street and delivering mail and dealing with customers,” he said. “Some people are happy to see me, and some are not.”
And he understands why. Depending on what he’s delivering, he can make someone’s day better or worse. Either way, he said, he loves to see the people he serves.
One of his favorite things is visiting the area’s assisted-living facilities. Staff and residents remember to save a piece of pie for him, which shows the joy he brings to people.
“I like to interact with the customers,” he said. “Delivering good news is the best part of my day.”
And while the holidays means delivering more parcels, which typically means distributing happiness, Castro said he doesn’t have a favorite holiday for bringing mail.
“Like I said,” he added with a smile, “every day is a different day.”
So as Castro goes about his route with the aim of brightening the day of those he serves, he doesn’t take for granted what they have done for him.
“I thank the voters,” he said. “I hope to win again next year.”
