Growing up, Morgan Herraez struggled as a reader. Now, she’s the librarian at Spicewood Elementary School. Her goal is to help students learn the love of reading earlier in their lives than she did.

“I struggled, mainly because I was told what to read,” Herraez said. “I let them (students) decide what to read. I help them find the books, but they decide and read what interests them.”

Harreaz was voted Favorite Librarian in the Marble Falls area byThe Picayune Magazine readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners in the 2025 Locals Love Us contest. The category is new this year.

A Spicewood resident, Harreaz has been the librarian at the elementary school for three years. Before that, she was teaching at Burnet Middle School.

“My child goes to school here (in Spicewood), so when the library job opened up, I jumped at it,” she said. “I fell in love with it.”

The people whose lives she touches in her job have fallen in love with her—obviously—especially the youngsters who have stepped into her world of books and adventure.

“I love the joy on their faces when they’ve completed their book or when they find a new one they like,” Herraez said. “I love when they come in here for a time to think and have a break in their day.”

Not so quiet are the times she reads to classes. One of her favorite children’s authors is Aaron Reynolds, who writes the “Creepy” series.

“I love all the ‘Creepy’ books,” she said. “‘Creepy Carrots,’ ‘Creepy Crayon,’ and even ‘Creepy Pair of Underwear.’”

Herraez took students to the Marble Falls Public Library when Reynolds came for an author’s visit last year.

“He was phenomenal,” she said. “He interacted with the kids. They got to meet an author and get an autograph. It was fun.”

That’s just what reading becomes with a visit to Ms. Herraez and the Spicewood Elementary School library.
