For a rich lesson in local history and an experience you won’t forget, check out Christmas at Old Fort Croghan from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. The annual event offers visitors to the Fort Croghan Museum and Grounds, 703 Buchanan Drive in Burnet, a taste of the holidays in a 19th-century frontier town.

The museum will be decorated for the season, complete with Christmas trees, and lit exclusively by luminarias, kerosene lanterns, and fireplaces. Historically dressed volunteers will share stories from days gone by and sing traditional Christmas carols.

With a $5 donation, visitors can enjoy a bowl of homemade soup with a side of bread. Cookies and hot cider will be served, too.

Fort Croghan was one of four of the U.S. Army’s westernmost forts from 1849-52. It was home to Company C 8th Infantry, USA, and the Second Dragoon Regiment.

Admission to Christmas at Old Fort Croghan is free, but donations are appreciated as proceeds support the museum and the Burnet County Heritage Society.
