HOOVER'S VALLEY — The biggest problem for someone enjoying a day (or more) at Inks Lake State Park is deciding what to do. There are so many options.
“It’s definitely a family park, but it has something for every member of the family from the little ones to grandparents,” said Cory Evans, the park superintendent. “There really is something for every one.”
Which is one reason The Picayune readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners voted Inks Lake State Park as the 2018 Locals Love Us favorite park in the Burnet area.
The Highland Lakes appears to love Inks Lake State Park. Evans has to find a place for the 2018 Locals Love Us award sticker among the line of others the state park has earned over the years.
While you can participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities such as kayaking, fishing, swimming, and hiking, one thing that really helps the park stand out is its knowledgeable and friendly staff. The folks at the front office are always glad to see you and send you in the right direction.
It’s a friendly, helpful demeanor you’ll discover across Inks Lakes State Park, and the camp hosts are no exception. These volunteers help on several park projects in return for getting to spend time near beautiful Inks Lake in an RV.
Visitors of all ages enjoy the park.
“For the little ones, it’s a great place to learn to fish,” Evans said.
The park routinely hosts Fishing with a Ranger programs on Fridays or Saturdays during which kids (and adults) can learn the basics of fishing under the tutelage of a ranger, a park staff member, or a knowledgable volunteer.
If you don’t have a rod and reel, the park will provide them free of charge along with tackle boxes. If you’re fishing from the shore of Inks Lake within the state park, you don’t even need a license.
To venture out onto the lake, you can rent paddleboats, canoes, and one- or two-person kayaks from the park.
If you want to stretch your legs, take a hike on miles of trails. For a nice excursion, check out the 2.2-mile Woodland Trail.
Or, just set up your camp chair by the lake and relax.
Inks Lake State Park really does have something for everyone. Go to tpwd.texas.gov for a list of upcoming events and activities at the park, and find out for yourself why Locals Love Inks Lake State Park.
“This is great,” Evans said about the latest Local Love Us honors. (The park also won for favorite outdoor activity-hiking, favorite marina/water activities, and favorite campsites.) “We really appreciate this.”
