With so many parks spread across the Highland Lakes, The Picayune Magazine readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners surely had a tough time selecting their 2022 Locals Love Us favorites. This year, the awards went to Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park and Resort for the Burnet area, Johnson Park for the Marble Falls area, and Badu Park for the Kingsland/Llano area.
The 940-acre Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park and Resort, 16942 RR 2341 on the northwest shore of Lake Buchanan in Burnet, is a stop on any nature lover's bucket list.
The park takes its name from a famous winter Texan: the American bald eagle. From fall through early spring, bald eagles take up residence in the upper reaches of Lake Buchanan.
Canyon of the Eagles has 16 miles of groomed nature trails to explore that are open dusk to dawn year-round. Overnight guests get free use of the trails as part of their stay; day visitors ages 11 and older pay an $8 fee.
Other amenities include the astronomer-staffed Eagle Eye Observatory, which holds regular stargazing programs, as well as a labyrinth, nature programs and guided tours, live music, dining, and lodging with rooms or RV and tent sites. For more information, visit canyonoftheeagles.com.
Badu Park, 300 Legion Drive in Llano, has access to the Llano River, where you can relax or stroll the waterfront. During warm weather, kids can enjoy a playscape and splash pad.
The park has plenty of places for picnics, whether you throw a blanket on the ground or use one of the many available tables. It’s also a great location for kayaking and fishing.
Badu Park hosts a number of events, including the Starry, Starry Nights holiday lights display and the Llano River Chuck Wagon Cook-off, which is April 1-2 this year.

Johnson Park, 230 Avenue J in Marble Falls, is truly a community park. Set along Backbone Creek, which feeds into Lake Marble Falls, the park features a boat launch, picnic tables, and playscapes under the shade of tall, expansive pecan trees. It's a great spot for fishing and bird-watching. A walking trail connects Johnson Park with Lakeside and Westside parks.
Johnson Park also hosts community events, including MayFest (May 4-7) and the Howdy-Roo Chili Cook-off (typically in early May).
