Before many people set foot in their offices, Burnet High School receptionist Sunya Denton is already at work preparing for the start of another school day for students and staff.
The first thing she does each morning is get everything ready for the substitute teachers, who begin arriving at 7:30 a.m. Then, she's greeting kids and parents who come through the front door.“I do love working for the district,” she said. “I do love the kids.”
Denton has worked at the high school for 16 years. Her ability to make everyone who walks through the front door feel welcome and appreciated hasn’t gone unnoticed. Certainly, The Picayune Magazine readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners noticed, picking her as a 2022 Locals Love Us Favorite School Administrator.
Over the past 16 years, Denton has touched the lives of countless students and their parents. Sometimes, all a student needs to brighten their day is a kind or encouraging word or even a smile from Denton. Or, a parent might have questions and not know where to turn. Denton points them in the right direction.
Even when students graduate and move on, many remember Denton.
“I’ve been to many weddings of kids who went to school here,” she said.
Her job is more than a paycheck. She is part of the Burnet High School family that is striving to change the lives of students.
“I bleed green,” Denton said. “I’m Burnet born and raised, and I love being a part of this school and this community.”
