Cast a line without a license on Free Fishing Day in Texas, which is the first Saturday in June. In 2025, that’s June 7. Everyone can fish recreationally on public waters without a state license or endorsement. The aim is to hook more people on the sport of angling.
In the Highland Lakes, Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery, 345 Clay Young Road in Burnet, is hosting a special event June 7 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Things to know, if you go:
- There’s a limit of three fish per person (you keep what you catch).
- The hatchery’s ponds are stocked with big catfish, so bring a big cooler and ice.
- Bring your own tackle and landing net or borrow from the hatchery’s limited supply. Hooks must be single, barbless, or de-barbed (no trebles). Modified fishing tackle is not allowed, and you must use the hatchery’s bait.
- Bring lawn chairs, a hat, sunscreen, and non-alcoholic beverages.
- The facility has limited handicap accessibility.
- You must sign a liability release and use of likeness form.
- Children must be under the supervision of an adult (one adult per two children).
- Fish cleaning is not allowed on hatchery grounds.
- Alcohol and weapons are prohibited per federal regulations.
In addition to Free Fishing Day, you can fish without a license year-long from inside more than 70 Texas State Parks. State bag and length limits still apply. Find a list of state parks in the Highland Lakes here and what type of fish are swimming in our local waters here.
