BURNET — When Cindi Ashford-Fry of The Picayune and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune stepped into Burnet County District Clerk Casie Walker’s office, Walker admitted she was a little bewildered.
Not by Ashford-Fry’s appearance but the reason for the visit.
“She handed me this award, and I immediately thought she might be in the wrong place,” Walker said.
But Ashford-Fry wasn’t and presented Walker with the 2016 Locals Love Us award for favorite government employee in the Burnet area.
Walker is in her second term as the Burnet County district clerk.
“I was shocked by the award,” Walker said. “I was elected to this position and then re-elected, which is such a big honor to have the community think I’m doing a good job here. But then to get this, it confirms that the public believes I’m doing a good job.”
Walker, as the district clerk, oversees the Burnet County District Clerk’s Office and staff. She explained that the district clerk is the custodian for the district court records as well as oversees the office where people apply for passports. The records include civil, criminal, family, adoption and other associated ones.
“Adoption is probably the most fun because it means a child is getting a forever home,” Walker said. “One of the best things I enjoy about this job is you get to help people who may not be in the best circumstances of their life at that moment. And they appreciate your help. Other than passports and adoptions, most of what we deal with is not exactly the most positive things going on in a person’s life.”
Walker and her staff strive to make sure everyone who steps into their office or calls on the phone gets professional service and assistance, no matter his or her situation.
The Locals Love Us award, Walker said, just reaffirms the community sees what she and her staff are doing and like it.
“Thank you to everyone who voted,” Walker said. “I’m very blessed to have this job and to work in such a wonderful community.”
