BUCHANAN DAM — For more than 50 years, the Buchanan Arts & Crafts Guild has provided local artisans a place to come and share their work. But it’s more than that as well.
The guild, 17534 Texas 29 in Buchanan Dam, offers a place people can further their art or begin exploring one. The gallery offers a spot folks can attend classes, take a workshop or just exchange ideas.
A big bonus, however, is it also provides members a regular place to exhibit and even sell their work.
While the Buchanan Arts & Crafts Guild is relatively small compared to some other guilds, this one has a big history. It all started when Alma Howert wanted to learn more about art and share it with others in the area. In October 1963, she and a handful of others formed the guild.
Now, remember this was back in the 1960s, when the Buchanan Dam area was still extremely rural, more so than today. Yet, a group of residents saw the importance of art and formed what is considered one of the oldest guilds in the country.
The guild attracts artists from the immediate area as well as from other communities, including Fredericksburg, Burnet and Marble Falls for events and workshops.
During the summer, the Buchanan Arts & Crafts Guild also hosts a youth summer camp.
The camp gives kids a chance to explore the arts in a supportive and fun setting. Often, many of the youth come back summer after summer. While the youth benefit in so many ways, the guild members and camp instructors do, too, because they get to help bring up the next generation of artists.
For its five decades of commitment to the arts and work with artists of all levels, The Picayune readers and KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune listeners voted the Buchanan Arts & Crafts Guild the 2015 Locals Love Us favorite Llano/Kingsland/Horseshoe Bay-area art gallery.
Congratulations.
