Some of the best access points to the fabled hills and shores of the Highland Lakes are through the numerous Lower Colorado River Authority parks and recreation areas. The LCRA is best known for its management of water and energy in Central Texas, but it has also cultivated awesome outdoor opportunities, including at Turkey Bend Recreation Area, 400 Shaw Drive in Marble Falls.

Turkey Bend Recreation Area is a sweeping gem in the crown of Lower Colorado River Authority parks that dot the length of the river chain of Highland Lakes.

The 1,146-acre park boasts 30 campsites, over 15 miles of trails open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, and direct access to a stunning stretch of Lake Travis.

Terrain varies, but Turkey Bend’s hallmark feature are the sprawling meadows that span its south side.

Dozens of picnic and camping spots overlook the fields, offering views that reach across the distant water to massive luxury villas hanging on to the hillside.

Hiking can be a leisurely half-mile trek along the Goodnight Trail or a calf-busting 15-mile march on the 13 interconnected trails that loop through Turkey Bend.

The trails traverse the mild meadows and plunge into thick brush. If you want an authentic Texas Hill Country experience of buzzards circling overhead, prickly pear nipping at your heels, and a guessing game of bobcat or coyote tracks, then Turkey Bend is the place to be.

Swimmers and anglers aren’t left out, with plenty of access along a meandering bend in the Colorado River, which forms Lake Travis in this part of the Highland Lakes chain. Drop a line for catfish, bass, crappie, gar, and bluegill.

Turkey Bend is an easygoing family getaway with drive-up camping spots, fire pits, grills, and picnic tables.

Snag a site with shade trees if possible. Preview camping spots before booking on the LCRA’s interactive park reservation map.

The park is just far enough from civilization to feel like you’re in the frontier but not too far away from conveniences. About 25 minutes away is Marble Falls, where you can grab groceries, a coffee, or camping gear. You can also reach Smithwick Market at 9135 RR 1431 for fuel, snacks, and odds and ends.

For the best experience, visit the park in early to mid-spring for bluebonnet season or mid- to late fall for cooler temperatures and green vegetation.

No matter the time of year, Turkey Bend Recreation Area is the perfect spot to experience the natural beauty of the Highland Lakes.
